Starting out

Nexus Driver Training - your key to successBefore you take your first driving lesson you must be 17 years of age and in possession of a valid provisional driving licence.  You should also ensure that your eyesight meets the minimum standard required to drive.  If you have any doubts please visit your optician.

How many Lessons will I need?

The number of lessons required will depend on your ability to acquire the skills of driving. The Driving Standards Agency states the average person needs around 45 hours of professional training combined with around 20 hours private practice.  It should be remembered however, that everyone learns at a different pace.  A positive attitude and desire to drive are the key factors to success.

Your first lesson

You will be met at your chosen destination.  Your first lesson will normally be two hours in duration.  After introductions, your driving licence and eyesight will be checked and the driving syllabus will be explained to you.

Learning to driveIf you've had no previous driving experience you will learn about the main controls of the car, where they are and what they do. You will then be introduced to the Mirror - Signal - Manoeuvre (MSM) system of car control.  By the end of your first lesson you should be able to move the car safely away from the kerb and return safely to the parked position (Well done, you're now driving).

Learners with driving experience will first familiarise themselves with the car controls. After a discussion about your driving knowledge, you will undertake a short assessment drive to establish the right level at which to start instruction.  The remainder of the lesson will focus on building skills you already have.

At the end of your first lesson we will discuss your progress and plan your next lesson.

Further lessons

Each subsequent lesson will build on the skills already learnt, gradually moving you closer to your goal of becoming a safe, confident driver.  Your progress will be recorded on your Driver Record Card. This gives you a clear understanding of what is required in order to prepare for your test.

During your training it is important to focus on acquiring the skills to drive safely and confidently and not just passing the practical test.  Your lessons will ensure you experience a wide range of traffic conditions enabling you to pass your test with confidence, giving you the best preparation for driving on your own.
